NASA Technologies in the Beauty and Health Industry

LED therapy is a therapy with low light levels orphotobiomodulation, based on Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology.

LED therapy in the healthcare and beauty industry is a very young technology. However, every year it is gaining momentum – an increasing number of health enterprises are introducing LED therapy into the menu of their services. An increasing number of people are usingworld therapyand LED gadgets to achieve a therapeutic and aesthetic effect at home, due to the wide availability of such devices.

LED therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is a cutting-edge treatment that utilizes low light levels through Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. Although relatively new in the healthcare and beauty industry, LED therapy is rapidly gaining popularity. Many health enterprises are incorporating LED therapy into their services, and more people are using LED devices for therapeutic and aesthetic purposes at home due to their increasing availability.

For several decades, since the 90s of the last century, the NASA space agency has conducted large-scalescientific and experimental research on the use of the visible light spectrum to control the biological processes of living organisms, primarily plants. In the course of numerous experiments, impressive effects of light radiation were discovered, including for humans. The effect of waves of the visible light spectrum of various lengths was studied. Each wave corresponds to different colors and penetrates the skin to different depths. Red light has the longest wavelength and blue light has the shortest. Waves of yellow, orange and green light have average length. The studies revealed that the blue-green spectrum of visible light significantly suppresses the production of melatonin and leads to wakefulness, and the red one accelerates tissue regeneration, relieves pain and has other therapeutic effects. Data were also obtained on the therapeutic effects of light and the prospects for its use, which are important for employees of deep space missions. At the end of cooperation with the space agency, some companies that participated in the research as contractors transferred the acquired knowledge to a commercial basis. So in the year a new technology appeared on the beauty and health market – light therapy.
In the 1990s, NASA conducted extensive scientific research on the use of visible light spectrum to control biological processes in living organisms, particularly in plants. Through numerous experiments, significant effects of light radiation were discovered, including on humans. Different wavelengths of light corresponding to various colors, such as red, blue, yellow, orange, and green, were studied, with each wavelength penetrating the skin to different depths. It was found that blue-green spectrum of visible light can suppress melatonin production, promoting wakefulness, while red light can accelerate tissue regeneration, relieve pain, and have other therapeutic effects.
These findings also had important implications for deep space missions, as they could potentially benefit the health of astronauts. After the collaboration with NASA, some companies that were involved in the research translated the acquired knowledge into commercial applications, leading to the emergence of a new technology known as light therapy in the beauty and health market.

Today, light emitting diodes, or LED therapy, is used as a natural and safe treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including acne and age-related changes.
Light therapy is actively used in medicine, especially widely in American medical institutions, as a necessary element of complex programs of preventive integrative medicine, treatment protocols of conventional medicine. In particular, the prospects of light therapy for the treatment of diabetic foot are open. Just think – diabetes is a major international health problem affecting more than 387 million people, and 25% of them are at risk of a lifelong problem of non-healing foot ulcers due to diabetes. Several large randomized control trials have shown encouragingtherapeutic results in the treatment of ulcers without any side effects when using light emitting diodes. A number of other studies have shown that LED therapy can optimize cellular functions and molecular pathways and may be a promising treatment for a range of diseases. In addition, some studies have shown that red light can help restore hair in people with androgenetic alopecia, or male and female pattern hair loss.

However, let’s return to the use of LED therapy in cosmetology and the beauty industry.
LED therapy allows you to solve many different aesthetic skin problems:
• reduce excess body fat
• eliminate tissue swelling by accelerating lymph flow
• improve skin quality and elasticity
• smooth out wrinkles and skin creases on the face
• clean the surface of the skin from clogged pores, blackheads and comedones
• improve skin elasticity and turgor
• accelerate the metabolism of skin cells

LED light therapy in the beauty and health industry has undeniable advantages: the procedures are environmentally friendly, non-invasive, painless, and do not require recovery. Most often, specific red and blue wavelengths are used in light therapy. Waves are gratefully absorbed by the skin during pleasant and comfortable procedures and bring visible results. It has been clinically proven thatred wavelengths of light energy activate cellular metabolism in fibroblasts and thus contribute to a rather rapid production of collagen and elastin.
LED light therapy in the beauty and health industry offers non-invasive, painless, and environmentally friendly procedures that do not require recovery time. Red wavelengths of light can activate cellular metabolism, promoting collagen and elastin production for improved skin health and appearance. Clinical studies support the effectiveness of LED therapy in achieving visible results without discomfort or downtime.
LED therapy achieves its anti-aging effects through direct exposure to specific wavelengths of light in combination with comprehensive therapy. The synergistic effect of LED photobiostimulation therapy, along with individual cosmetic procedures and supplementation, can yield remarkable results. Unlike invasive techniques, LED therapy may not show immediate effects right after the procedure, but it initiates cellular activity instantly. The best results are typically achieved over time, as the cumulative effects of LED therapy and accompanying treatments become evident, making it a preferred option for those seeking non-invasive and gradual anti-aging solutions. Moreover, LED therapy using red wavelengths of light also has a relaxing and calming effect, which can be beneficial for clients in today’s hectic times. Typically, LED therapy is administered in a course of treatments, making it economically viable for health and beauty establishments. The recommended frequency of treatments is usually 2-3 sessions per week, or even more, with a course duration of 10 days or longer. The optimal results of LED therapy are often noticeable about a month after completing the course and can last for up to 3 years, providing long-term benefits for clients seeking anti-aging and skin rejuvenation solutions.

Preparation for photodynamic LED therapy is not required. At the consultation, the doctor or cosmetologist will determine the condition of the skin and its needs, based on this, select the right light.

Light therapy is perfectly combined with photorejuvenation, photo- and laser rejuvenation, peels, SMAS-lifting and other procedures to improve the result and reduce the rehabilitation period.

Light therapy is universal, suitable for any skin type, age and gender, it can be used at any time of the year, as well as before and after tanning.

Therefore, LED light therapy is becoming so popular in preventive medicine clinics, SPA & Wellness, including hotels and resorts. And this trend, no doubt, will exist for many years.

For the beauty industry, manufacturing companies offer a significant variety of low-level light therapy devices:

• Portable and small-sized panels for LED therapy of the face, neck and décolleté or individual areas of the body. These panels are produced in various modifications, they can be round or rectangular, have the entire spectrum of light or only one, most often red. Recently, flexible

• Oversized LED panels for the whole body from head to toe. Recently, innovative flexible blanket-like models have been invented that are easy and convenient to use.

• Devices with a maniple-emitter for local chromotherapy. As a rule, such devices have the function of choosing a light wave from 7 colors.

• High-tech mobile units with built-in moving LED panel

• Removable LED masks. Such masks follow the anatomical contours of the face and have a full range of 7 colors. Often they cannot be classified as professional equipment, but they are used in cosmetic facial treatments, and can also be offered as additional services during infusion drip therapy (IV therapy), body wraps, foot massage, and more.

• Compact gadgets for home use, which are profitable to sell to clients of Medi Spa, cosmetology clinic, plastic surgery clinic or beauty salon. The range of gadgets is great – from LED sticks, LED hair combs and ending with desktop and floor LED panels, modified in height, length and shape.

For the most part, all light therapy equipment is relatively safe. However, you should be very careful in choosing the equipment manufacturer and carefully study all the necessary documentation about the technologies used and their quality. The quality of these devices may vary. At least one manufacturer is known to have withdrawn its light therapy acne mask in 2019 in response to concerns about potential eye damage from the device in people with underlying eye conditions or those taking medications that make the eyes more sensitive to light.
